Passwords & autofill
Apple Keychain in Step
Step uses Apple Keychain as its primary credential vault.
1 min read
Storing passwords in Keychain means Step shares the same vault as Safari. You can sign in with Touch ID, the same data is available across your Apple devices, and nothing ever leaves your Mac without your action.
Why Keychain
Keychain is a hardened, OS-level vault. It uses the Secure Enclave for unlock and is encrypted with your account password. Step does not maintain a parallel vault by default.
Touch ID unlock
Step prompts for Touch ID before autofill. You can require Touch ID per autofill in Settings → Passwords → Require authentication.
Where to find Keychain
Open the Passwords app on macOS Sonoma or later, or Keychain Access on older versions. Entries written by Step appear there.
